There are 3 options for you to enjoy a nice trekk in Ushuaia:
1- Trekking Lagoon Turquesa & Mount Carabajal:
A day’s hike at one of the most beautiful places in Ushuaia, in a journey of discovery far from the beaten paths.
After a few minutes transfer to the Tierra Mayor Valley, we will begin trekking to see the wonderful color of a glacial lake before reaching a summit with a privileged view. The walk begins with a demanding slope. After an hour’s walk, the forest is behind, the slope is not as steep, and we begin to enjoy incredible views from the top.
After reached 500 meters, the valley moderates leads to the tiny Turquoise Lagoon that, after a snowy winter may still be frozen at the beginning of October. After admiring the curious color of the turquoise lagoon, we will continue to gain altitude along a rocky ridge, and reach the summit of Mount Carbajal, from where can see the namesake valley from an ideal perspective. From this point of view, it is easy to see the trace of the route that 10,000 years ago the glaciers made towards the Beagle Channel, during the last glaciation that shaped this unique landscape.
Duration: approx. 7 hours
2- Trekking Mount Pelado:
This hike to reach a lookout located over 850 metres (2 790 feet) above Ushuaia is for those who love heights. At the summit of this mount a 360o panorama awaits us: mount Olivia and mount Cinco Hermanos, the Carbajal and Andorra valleys, the Beagle Channel, Murray Pass, Navarino and Hoste islands and the best view of Ushuaia.
During a 3 hour-long uphill hike through the forest, we will have an intimate encounter with this millenary ecosystem. As we climb we might hear the mount pulse under our feet and hear its breath whispering in the trees. Once we reach the tree line, without the shelter of the forest, in the open we’ll see what the condors see. It is a steep and demanding hike, for which fitness is essential, but it pays-off with a moment between the clouds that exceeds imagination.
Duration: 7 hours.
3- Trekking Vincinguerra Glacier:
The tour begins in the morning with the transfer from the hotel to the Valley of Andorra, the place where many locals settled and formed one of the characteristic spontaneous urbanizations in Ushuaia. After leaving the vehicle, the walk goes along a meltwater, meandering river that goes through the peat bog that lines this valley. This wet and slippery ground will be found along much of the walk; so remember to pack the appropriate footwear!
Once in the forest, the ascent is constant, and while it is intense at the beginning, it is lessdemanding near the treeline, at some 600 meters above sea level. Once above the treeline, the views of the surrounding mountain range’s craggy peaks that enclose the valley where the hike started are astonishing.
The ascent continues along a stream that feeds from a glacial lagoon where, a few decades ago, the Vinciguerra glacier used to have its terminus, and where it used to calve icebergs.
Although nowadays the glacier retreated a few dozens of meters from the lagoon, it is now attractive for its caves and the magical gravitation it still has in this area of breathtaking views.
